The Daily Steps of Skin Care: What Are You Missing?

Posted on April 20 2017

Hello, gorgeous face in the bathroom mirror, you flawless, glowing skin, you. How did you get here and what will make you stay? The answer: by following a daily skin care routine like it’s your job!

Let’s face it, if people spent half the time on their skin care as they did on makeup, the world would be a pore-less place, and who doesn’t want clear, radiant skin? Beginning with a beautiful fresh face makes any makeup look a cinch. Keep reading if you agree!

Rule number one: NEVER sleep with your makeup on. That’s an easy habit to fall into and a tough one to break, but break it! Giving your skin and lashes a chance to breathe at night encourages a clear complexion. Wash your pillowcase regularly to remove oils from your skin and hair too.

Your morning and night routine should basically be the same: splash your face with warm water to open your pores. Next, massage your face with a gentle cream or gel cleanser to remove impurities and oil, like Clean and Clear’s Morning Burst Skin Brightening Cleanser (about $6 at drugstores). Rinse with cool water to close pores.

Throughout the week, dead skin cells build up creating a dull and dry finish on your face. It's best to exfoliate at least every seven days, and the Spin For Perfect Skin Facial Brush is a great way to do it. The rotary head gently massages to lift dirt and oil, while at the same time stimulating circulation and reducing pore size. (What’s not to love?) The extra attachments are a big plus as well. The entire set is available at Vanity Planet. (Extra perk: it works great on arms and legs too!)

Keep it Clean

Next, reach for some astringent while your face is still freshly washed. You can use this as spot treatment if your skin is prone to dryness, or apply it all over.. Whichever you decide, choose something with salicylic acid to fight blemishes. For spot treatment, you'll love the e.l.f Zit Zapper for targeting problem areas. A good all-over go-to is Neutrogena Clear Pore Oil controlling Astringent.

Toner is a game changer. It basically sets the “tone” for your skin to stay refreshed throughout the whole day. Simply soak a cotton ball in Proactive Acne Solutions Original Toner and sweep all over your face before makeup to feel oh-so fresh.

DO NOT skip this step! Some people think their skin was too oily to lather on more cream, but in reality going bare does more harm than good. Being too dry can trigger breakouts and uneven skin tones and lead to flaking. If you want some extra hydration, serum is like a magic elixir packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories that can be worn night and day under your regular moisturizer. But that’s entirely up to you! For those of you who are shine-prone, try sticking with a matte finish cream like Dermalogica Clean Start Oil Clearing Matte Moisturizer ($14 at Ulta). Bonus: it has SPF 15.

Sun Protection

And speaking of SPF, this is one of the main things to look for in makeup. Your skin undergoes some harmful rays throughout the day even just walking to your car. Make sure you’re wearing sun protection daily. Your future self will love you for it!
