I'm not lying when I say that it feels like I've been struggling with acne FOREVER. I still remember in fourth grade when that first little white spot showed up on my face (and with my luck, it was on picture day) and I ran to my mom crying, having no clue the struggle that loomed ahead.
Growing up in a conservative family, my parents weren't super keen on their fourth grader wearing makeup to school, which made me feel like I needed to hide from the world whenever those little whiteheads appeared. As I got older, it only got worse. And when running to the school bathroom to apply a little bit of concealer wasn't quite enough, I moved to the "order on tv solutions" which then led me to dermatologist appointments and prescriptions for accu-that and benzo-this, and through all of that, something profound and awful happened...
ACNE BECAME A MONSTER.
After the years of these prescriptions and appointments and so on, seemingly to no avail, the problem of acne became far more than something cosmetic and superficial, but a medical monster that I started to believe was unbeatable. And once the perspective went from "this is something I don't like" to "this is something that's wrong with me," my self confidence steadily degraded, and in so many ways, I lost hope.
It's been more than twenty years since my dreaded fourth grade picture day, but acne is definitely still something I'm prone to, but one key thing has changed– it doesn't freak me out anymore. Eventually, I stopped with the medications and the dermatologist appointments. And while that decision didn't initially help my skin, I can say with confidence that it helped my soul. I slowly realized that acne was not some sort of disability I was cursed with, but simply something about myself that I wanted to work on improving.
From there, I shifted my focus from the medical side of the issue to the practical one. I started focussing on simple skincare techniques that would leave me with healthier skin. I started placing a higher value on wearing sunscreen, cleaning my face nightly, and exfoliation. To my surprise, it seemed to work better than anything else I'd ever tried.
Now, I could be super cheesy and tell you that "I discovered the Vanity Planet facial cleansing brushes and they changed my life," but let's be real– I'm writing this on behalf of Vanity Planet, so that would be extremely forced and inauthentic. Instead, I figured I'd share some of our customer success stories (these ones are not Vanity Planet sponsored, I promise!):
As I was going through the reviews trying to narrow down the nine that would tell my story best, it was truly emotional for me.
